Founded in 2006, Explore Austin's mission is to "change the lives of underserved youth through the combination of mentoring and outdoor adventure." To accomplish this mission, we match adult mentors with underserved sixth grade youth, provide monthly outdoor adventures for mentors and mentees to experience together, and culminate every year with a weeklong wilderness trip in the mountains of Colorado. In addition to adventure, all of our activities integrate a renowned youth development framework created by the Search Institute in Minnesota (the 40 Developmental Assets).

What makes our program even more unique is that our Explorers enter the program in 6th grade and remain through the graduation of high school. In addition, our mentors commit to a minimum of two years service, hoping to establish the deep, personal, and long-term relationships that most of our Explorers' lives are missing. The result is nothing short of profound, for the Explorer and for the mentor. In the words of one Explorer, "It is one of the best programs that Austin has for young adults. It takes kids who are minorities and builds them into leaders for the future, and that's pretty meaningful to me".
