Doers & Builders
September's Doers and Builders - Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - Austin Affiliate
The Future Forum serves as a nexus for Austin's
leaders. Our
members are actively engaged in many organizations.
We encourage you to find out more about these
Doers
and Builders Organizations on our Website.
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was
established in Dallas in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in
honor of her sister, Suzy Komen, who died of breast
cancer at the age of 36. The Foundation, which is a
501 (c) 3 public charity, operates with a network of
volunteers working through a network of local
affiliates and more than one hundred Komen Race for
the Cure® events. The mission of the Komen
Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life
threatening disease by advancing research,
education, screening and treatment. Since its
inception, the Komen Foundation and its Affiliates
have raised in excess of $600 million.
On the local level, the Komen Austin Affiliate was
established in late 1999 to spread the life-saving
message of early detection and to support breast
cancer screening and diagnostic programs in Central
Texas. Up to 75 percent of the net income from the
Komen Austin Race for the Cure® and other
fundraising activities remain in the community to fund
breast cancer education and screening programs in
Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson
counties. Komen Austin places a special emphasis on
programs that provide breast cancer education and
screening to medically underserved populations.

Recent Events And Updates on Past Events/Speakers
If you missed the Ice Cream Social and Film event on
August 24, then you really missed out on a fun - and
sweets filled - evening. After socializing and having
ice cream under the trees on the Overlook, we went
inside to watch "The Last Days of the San Jose."
After the film, which is a fascinating look at an Austin
landmark and the people who gave it even more
character, Liz Lambert (the owner and filmmaker)
spoke to us about the film and the hotel. She also
answered Future Forum members' questions. Candy
and popcorn were provided during the film.
Many thanks to the Film Cluster for putting this great
film event together and to Liz and her staff for
letting us view the film and for speaking to us.

Now Showing at the LBJ Library and Museum
Come check out the Permanent Exhibits at the LBJ
Library and Museum.
And, come check out the new Exhibit opening
September 2nd, "Power to the People: The
Electrification of Rural Texas."
Walk into a world before television, computers, the
iPod, refrigerators or even running water.
The
exhibit, Power to the People: The Electrification of
Rural Texas, is a unique story of one of the most
dramatic events in Texas history. Rural Texas in the
1930s was still in the dark as electric lines hadn’t
penetrated the beautiful, but rugged Texas Hill
Country.
Lyndon Johnson grew up here,
without
electricity, and vowed that once he had the
political power to bring change, he would. Visitors
will journey through time – feeling how tough life
was without electricity, seeing how Johnson worked
his political will to bring power lines to the
region, and understanding the difference
electrification made in the lives of Central Texans.
A highlight of the exhibit: home movies of the era
narrated by Lady Bird Johnson.
Come to the Opening Celebration
Power to the People: The Electrification of Rural
Texas
Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006

1:00 to 3:00 p.m. - Bar-b-que lunch by The Salt
Lick

exhibit, receive a ticket, and present that ticket for
their bar-b-que lunch.
The festivities will be by the fountain in front of the
Library.

Please join us in celebrating President Johnson’s
birthday, August 27, 2006. The Library will be serving
cake and coffee to the public from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
that day.
Also, don't forget, the LBJ Library and Museum is
open from 9-5 every day of the year except
Christmas day. And, admission is free (we are the
only Presidential Library that is free). By the way,
another bonus of the LBJ Library and Museum - the
view! The great picture of Texas Tower and the
Fountain looking out from the LBJ Library and Museum
is courtesy of Charles Bogel, who always takes the
great pictures at our events.
