Dear Catherine,
Welcome to March. Yes, it is March already. And,
no we can't believe it either. But, March means more
great Future Forum events, which is always a good
thing.
The Film Cluster will be watching
"Blood Diamand" and we are joining with the
Austin Music Foundation to put on an event with
Marybeth Peters on Copyright and Entertainment
(see below). Plus, we will have some
opportunities for members to attend tapings of
Texas Monthly Talks, so keep
your eyes and mailboxes open for more information.
Coming in May, a debate between Christopher Hitchens
and Marvin Olasky, plus other great events still brewing.
There are lots of good events coming up, so get
ready for a great Spring.

Doers & Builders
March's Doers and Builders - Capital Area Food Bank
The Future Forum serves as a nexus for Austin's
leaders. Our
members are actively engaged in many organizations.
We encourage you to find out more about these
Doers
and Builders Organizations on our website.
The mission of the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas
(CAFB) is to nourish hungry people and lead the
community in ending hunger. In its 26th year of
service, CAFB currently provides food and grocery
products to 370 Partner Agencies in 21 Central Texas
counties covering 21,600 square miles. In 2006,
CAFB distributed more than 16 million pounds of food.
In addition to weekly food distribution, CAFB conducts
several programs including Fresh Food for Families,
Kids Cafe, Healthy Options Program for the Elderly
(HOPE), CHOICES Nutrition Education Program, and
the new BackPack Program. With every $1 donated,
the Food Bank can provide 5 meals. That’s because
almost 90% of the food they distribute is donated, and
because more than 5,000 volunteer hours are
donated every month.

Recent Events And Updates on Past Events/Speakers
Last month the Future Forum hosted The Future
of
Texas: A Conversation with Young Texas
Legislators. Our panel consisted of:
Representatives Veronica Gonzales, Donna Howard,
Mark Strama, and Corbin Van Arsdale; and Senator
Glenn Hegar. It was an informative, thoughtful, and
inspiring discusssion and reassured many of us
about the prospects for our future.
Our panelists shared their thoughts on some of the
issues facing the state of Texas this session,
particularly in regards to education and energy
issues. The panel discussion was followed by
question and answer session and a reception.
BIG, big thanks to all of our panelists for taking time out
of their busy schedules to come speak with us and
thanks to all who attended and helped make it such a
great event.

Other Community Events
There are lots of great events happening in and
around
Austin.
Dana Gioia, poet and Chairman of the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA), reads a selection
of poetry on Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at the
Harry Ransom Center. A question and answer
session follows this Ransom Center 50th anniversary
event. Gioia, a poet, critic, and translator, is one of the
most influential and controversial voices in
contemporary poetry today. He is the recipient of
numerous awards and honors and has chaired the
NEA since 2003. His essay, "Can Poetry Matter?"
which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1991,
sparked an international debate on the role of poetry
in modern intellectual life. Seating is free, but limited.
