June 2007
Dear Sarah,

We are wrapping up another wonderful season. We have one more event - Michael Beschloss discussing Presidential Courage - and then we are done with our big events for the season (although the film cluster is still meeting and the book club is looking to set something up soon). But, we will be back next year with many more interesting, and thought provoking events.
And, we will be celebrating our 5th Birthday at the end of the summer! More information coming soon. WE hope you will come back for another season.

Plus, we are continuing to work on improving the Future Forum. We would love to hear your thought, so please help us by participating. You can also send us email if you have any ideas to share. You can email us at catherine@lbjlibrary.net.

On Monday, June 11, the Future Forum will host best-selling author and presidential historian Michael Beschloss. Evan Smith, Editor of Texas Monthly, will interview Beschloss on a timely topic: what determines presidential greatness. Please plan to join us in the Atrium on the 10th floor of the Library. A reception and book-signing will follow.

Beschloss was recently appointed NBC News' Presidential Historian and appears regularly on Meet the Press, Today, and other NBC News programs. He is also the author of numerous best-sellers. His latest book, Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789-1989, describes crucial times when courageous presidents took career-threatening risks and overcame obstacles to dramatically change the future of the United States. Copies of Presidential Courage will be sold during the reception. Please register if you plan to attend. This event is for Future Forum members. You may join or renew at the event.

More about the Future Forum: The purpose of the Future Forum is to expand the involvement of young Texans with the LBJ Library and its programs by initiating dialogue about current issues and by providing educational and cultural information to its members. It is the ultimate goal of the Future Forum to foster greater civic involvement within our community.

Join the Film Cluster Monday, June 4, for Chalk at the Alamo South Lamar. The movie starts at 7:45 p.m.; we will meet in the lobby by 7:30 to give us a few minutes to order food and drinks. It is the Alamo, after all. For info on the movie, please visit Chalk . The filmmakers are from Austin, and the film was largely shot locally with the assistance of students in the RTF program of an area high school. It hit theaters a couple of weekends ago to a packed house at the Alamo, and it's stay has been extended based on its tremendous showing. Come out Monday night to support our local filmmakers. If you are a teacher, please come. And if you're not, bring any teacher/educator friends you have. This movie presents an interesting viewpoint on public education. We'd love to have some teachers involved in the discussion. Please email Taline Manassian if you plan to come or have any questions. See you at the movies!

If you would like to be added to the Book Club list, please email Rob Crosnoe.

If you would like to help plan events for the Cultural Cluster , please email Cindy LaFrance or email the Future Forum.

Future Forum Clusters
Doers & Builders

The Future Forum serves as a nexus for Austin's leaders. Our members are actively engaged in many organizations. We encourage you to find out more about these Doers and Builders Organizations on our website.

The mission of the Town Lake Trail Foundation is to expand, improve, beautify and maintain the scenic hike and bike trail that shadows the Colorado River as it flows through Austin, Texas. The Foundation works to assure that the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail remains one of the most natural and well-maintained hike and bike paths in the United States.

On June 23, the Town Lake Trail Foundation will host a Casino Night Fundraiser. For more information, please visit www.townlaketrail.org.

On May 14 the Future Forum hosted a thought- provoking debate on religion featuring Christopher Hitchens and Marvin Olasky. Hitchens, a provocative atheist and author of the new book God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, sparred with Olasky, a U.T. journalism professor and editor of World Magazine, a Christian newsweekly. Both speakers signed copies of their books available for purchase after the program. If you missed the debate or just want to watch it again, the webcast is available online: Hitchens/Olasky debate.
