Future Forum Newsletter
January 2007
Dear Catherine,

Happy New Year! We hope that it will be a great year - for the Future Forum and for you! If you are like us, a new year means it's time to start the annual tradition of writing 2006 and then crossing it out and filling in 2007.

It also means gearing up to get re-engaged with all of those things we love best - like the Future Forum. If you haven't been to an event in a while, or if you haven't renewed your membership yet, make that a New year's resolution and get going on one more way to make 2007 great.

We have set the dates for the Re-Gift Party and the Future of Texas: A Conversation with Young Texas Legislators (see below). For March, we are working on an event on copyright and entertainment.

And, if you are still looking for a good holiday gift, how about the gift of a Future Forum membership? Then, it is a gift all around - for your friend, for you, and for us! We would love to know your friends. For more information, please contact Sarah Groos.

Happy New Year!

Doers & Builders
January's Doers and Builders - Young Men's Business League

The Future Forum serves as a nexus for Austin's leaders. Our members are actively engaged in many organizations. We encourage you to find out more about these Doers and Builders Organizations on our website.

Founded in 1913, the Young Men’s Business League has provided camp retreats for children since 1928. Today, the YMBL operates with approximately 125 volunteer members who all contribute their skills and talents to various initiatives that both raise money and assist in the operation and management of our community programs. The mission is simple: “To provide deserving children of Austin and the surrounding areas with programs that give them opportunities for personal development, the skills necessary to succeed in school and life, and the hope for a better future.”

Young Men’s Business League Demographics: The YMBL is composed of young men typically between the age of 22-40. They have a wide array of professions such as law, banking, marketing, investments, landscape architecture, engineering, programmers, and more. Many are involved in civic groups in addition to their role with YMBL.

About the Austin Sunshine Camps: The original inspiration for the Austin Sunshine Camps was to bolster the immunity of disadvantaged, underfed children against tuberculosis. The intent has changed since 1928, but our goal remains the same: to strengthen “at-risk” youth against those things that threaten their health—mental and physical. To date, more than 38,000 children have benefited from these efforts. A single summer camp has grown into an entire series of weeklong camps during the summer, a year-round leadership training program, and several scholarships for Sunshine Campers who graduate from high school.

To learn more about the Young Men's Business League, and about how you can get involved, check out their website at
Sunshine Camps.

Recent Events And Updates on Past Events/Speakers

Don't forget, you can check out DVDs of some of our past events. We took a break to celebrate the holidays, so there is not too much to report from December.

And, if you have never picked up your Future Forum T-shirt, don't forget to get it at the next event. See the picture above to see how good they look on Future Forum members!

More about this event
Other Community Events

There are lots of great events happening in and around Austin.

YMBL (see Doers and Builders section) and the Young Women's Alliance are hosting the Austin Under 40 Awards on March 9th.
The Austin Under 40 Awards (AU40) is a premiere awards event honoring Austin’s most prominent business and community leaders under the age of forty. Since 1998, Austin’s Young Women’s Alliance (YWA), and Young Men’s Business League (YMBL) have joined forces to recognize young Austinites who excel in their respective professions and who exhibit a solid commitment to community service. The event also raises money for the charities supported by both YWA and YMBL—the YWA Foundation and the YMBL Austin Sunshine Camps.

Please take a moment to think of a friend or colleague who could be a nominee. This is a great way to recognize somebody for their hard work and their devotion to the Austin community. There are ten categories ranging from Law to Youth/Education to Real Estate. Past winners include Bill Hopkins, Sarah Hickman, Evan Smith, Duffy Keever, and Judge Elizabeth Earle. Nominations can be made on-line at
w ww.austinunder40.org/nominations. Feel free to email or call Jim Kaighin with questions. He can be reached at jkaighin@choic eami.com or 302-6051.

Save the date—Tuesday, February 13, 5:30 p.m. The LBJ School presents Tom Ridge, former Director of Homeland Security and a past Governor of Pennsylvania. More information to come.
