Future Forum Newsletter
February 2007
Dear Catherine,

Welcome to February. We hope you all had a great Groundhog Day! OK, so early February is a little slow. But, from what we hear from that groundhog, we are heading towards Spring (also known as early Summer) here in Central Texas.

There is lots of information in the newsletter this month, so please read below to find out about Future Forum events, other events at the LBJ Library, and lots of good things happening in Austin.

We have set the dates for Future of Texas: A Conversation with Young Texas Legislators (see below). In March, we have an event on copyright and entertainment.

The Film Cluster meets on Monday, February 5th, to watch and discuss "Letters From Iwo Jim."

There are lots of good events coming up, so get ready for a great Spring.

On Thursday, February 22, we will present The Future of Texas: A Conversation with Young Texas Legislators at 7:00 p.m. in the Atrium at the Library. This is always a great event, so mark your calendar now. We'll send more details and a list of panelists soon.

While you have your calendar handy, save the date for a compelling discussion on entertainment and copyright law with Marybeth Peters, head of the U.S. Copyright Office. This event will take place on Friday, March 16 and is co-sponsored by the Austin Music Foundation.

More about the Future Forum: The purpose of the Future Forum is to expand the involvement of young Texans with the LBJ Library and its programs by initiating dialogue about current issues and by providing educational and cultural information to its members. It is the ultimate goal of the Future Forum to foster greater civic involvement within our community. Future Forum seeks to inspire!

Cluster Activity

It's time for another meeting of the Film Cluster. We will be watching Letters From Iwo Jima on Monday, February 5th, which should be a nice compliment to our previous screening of Flags of our Fathers. Here's the site for the movie: Letters from Iwo Jima.

We will watch the film at the 7 p.m. screening at Barton Creek Square, 2901 Capitol of Texas Highway. If you would like to be added to the Film Cluster email list, or have a suggestion for a film, please email Taline Manassian. See you at the movies!

If you would like to be added to the Book Club list, please email Rob Crosnoe .

The Cultural Cluster is gearing up for some fun cultural events. If you would like to help plan events for the Cultural Cluster, please email Cindy LaFrance or email the Future Forum. For more information and/or to join the cultural cluster, email Cindy LaFrance.

Learn about Texas native James Farmer, a pioneering civil rights leader. Farmer was the grandson of a slave and the founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) that challenged the segregation of interstate transportation with the Freedom Ride of 1961.

Recent Events And Updates on Past Events/Speakers

Last month the Film Cluster enjoyed a special viewing of Nobelity, a film by Austinite Turk Pipkin.

A stunning look at the world’s most pressing problems through the eyes of nine Nobel Laureates, Nobelity follows Pipkin’s personal journey to find enlightening answers about the kind of world our children and grandchildren will know. Filmed across the U.S., and in France, England, India, and Africa, Nobelity combines the insights of nine distinguished Nobelists with a first-person view of world problems and the children who are most challenged by them.

Afterwards, Pipkin graciously soke about the film and the Nobelity project and answered members' questions. For more information about the film and the Nobelity Project, please visit
www.nobelitythemovie.com or www.nobelity.org.

And, BIG thanks to Liz Lambert and Jo's Coffee House (and the great people there who helped us set the event up) for allowing us to watch and discuss the film there. We are hoping to team up with them again in the future for another film event!
