Doers & Builders
December's Doers and Builders
The Future Forum serves as a nexus for Austin's
leaders. Our
members are actively engaged in many organizations.
We encourage you to find out more about these
Doers
and Builders Organizations on our website.
The Austin Children's Shelter provides
emergency
shelter, high quality care and hope for the future to
the abandoned, abused and neglected children of our
community. When children are removed from their
homes due to life-threatening abuse or neglect, a
temporary home must be found for them until more
permanent plans are made. The Austin Children's
Shelter is a safe haven for children in crisis, and is
the only shelter in Travis County for children ages
birth to 17 years of age. It is the goal of the Shelter
to reduce the emotional trauma suffered by child
victims of abuse, violence and neglect, in a safe and
loving place. Each year ACS provides care to
approximately 300 children.

Shelter,

What else is Happening at the LBJ Library and Museum?
Come take advantage of our great programs
On November 17, the LBJ Library released recordings
and transcripts of President Johnson’s telephone
conversations from August through December 1966.
Issues discussed include: the Vietnam War, reaction
to 1966 mid-term Congressional elections, FBI
wiretaps, and Thurgood Marshall’s possible
appointment to the Supreme Court. The last time
tapes were released was April 2004.

Recent Events And Updates on Past Events/Speakers
If you missed the Behind the Scenes Tour on
December 4th, you missed a fun event. We took a
behind the
scenes tour of the LBJ Library and Museum, visiting
the Presidential Suite, the Reading Room (where we
heard a tape from the 60's), the Archives, and the
Museum storage. Members got to see the original
drawings of Dr. Seuss' manuscript of The Lorax
and hear the story of how it ended up at the
Library. We then celebrated the season at the
Library Holiday
Party in the
Great Hall.

Other Community Events
There are lots of great events happening in and
around
Austin.
Leadership Austin Roundtable on December 12,
2006.
Healthcare: The Economic Engine of the Central
Texas
Region?
What’s the plan for Austin’s new medical research
initiatives? Will it help solve Austin’s projected
shortage of doctors and nurses for basic health care
for the disadvantaged, for the aging Baby Boomers,
and for the area’s projected population growth? Can
Austin solve the dangerous trend of miracle medical
care only for the wealthy? Can we build a better
model – a sophisticated, high end medical care
system that serves all of its population?
December Roundtable Panelists:
* Greg Hartman, Senior Vice President, Marketing
and Planning, Seton Healthcare Network
* Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., Director, Institute for
Health Policy, University of Texas School of Public
Health, former commissioner of Texas Department of
State Health Services
Bring a friend for lunch
and dialogue about an issue with complexity and
immediacy for the greater Austin area. Luncheons are
held on the second Tues of the month, 11:30-1:00,
at
St. David's Episcopal Church, Crail Hall. The cost
