Greetings!

These past few weeks have been hard around here. As many of you know, the LBJ Library, the Future Forum, and I, personally, lost a great friend on July 11th when my grandmother, Lady Bird Johnson, passed away at the age of 94. This is a hard email to write, but I wanted to let you all know how much she appreciated all of you Future Forum members and supporters who have added so much life and energy to this Library she so loved. Although she has not been able to make it to many events in the past few years, she came to some of our events early on in our young life, and she was always interested in what was going on at the Library and with the Future Forum. I have had a standing Tuesday night dinner date with her for more than 8 years (the reason we rarely had Future Forum events on Tuesdays), and I always kept her up-to-date on what we were doing, what sort of programs we were putting on, and the conversations I had with so many of you. She loved to know what the "young people" (as she considered anyone under 94) were doing and she relished the great work and energy of our members in embracing the "Can Do" spirit that she, herself, exuded. (If you have never checked out the First Lady's Office on the 10th floor, go see her paperweight and this will make more sense!)

While this Library is named for my grandfather, my grandmother was as big a part of this Library as anyone and her spirit lives on here, as well. She loved this place, nurtured and supported this place, and rejoiced in its great achievements, including the work of the Future Forum. So for her and for me, I say a big thank you to all of you. If I may ask one favor of any or all of you, it is that you honor her this month by doing something to make this world and its inhabitants more beautiful. Thank you.

Doers & Builders

The Future Forum serves as a nexus for Austin's leaders. Our members are actively engaged in many organizations. We encourage you to find out more about these Doers and Builders Organizations on our website.

Austin Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to put our faith in action by building affordable, quality houses with families in need to eliminate poverty housing, one family at a time.

Join us on Thursday, August 16 for the seventh annual Eat the Heat fundraiser. The progressive cocktail party will wind through downtown Austin's 4th Street Warehouse District with stops at Vicci, Light Bar and Speakeasy's, with the final stop at City Hall. There, some of Austin's finest culinary talent will be featured along with their favorite ways to beat the grueling summer heat. A portion of the proceeds benefit Austin Habitat for Humanity's Habitat Young Professionals organization.

For more information about Habitat for Humanity or this event, please visit www.austinhabitat.org.

On June 11, Future Forum members enjoyed an intimate conversation with presidential historian and best-selling author Michael Beschloss. Beschloss and Evan Smith entertained with stories of presidential courage drawn primarily from Beschloss' new book Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789-1989. You can still purchase an autographed copy at the LBJ Museum Store.

The recent debate between Christopher Hitchens and Marvin Olasky continues to draw an audience. Hitchens, a provocative atheist and author of the book God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, sparred with Olasky, a U.T. journalism professor and editor of World Magazine, on May 14. If you missed the debate or just want to watch it again, the webcast is available online: Hitchens/Olasky debate.
